Behind the Image

It all begins with an idea.

Hi and welcome to the cairneyphoto web site.

These photographs are the work of Colin Cairney. Colin lives in the Scottish Borders between the soft rolling hills of the southern uplands and the low lying areas of the Scottish coast and that of North Northumberland. Of course, with easy access to the cities of the central belt of Scotland.

Although many of these photographs are of the local area, some are from the Isle of Harris which Colin has visited several times over the last few years. Harris is a place of outstanding beauty and a place every photographer should visit, at least once.

Although some photos are of the wider parts of Scotland, Colins main passion is the Scottish Borders, which is an area that is often overlooked by photographers as they head up to the rugged mountains further north. Colin likes to try to photograph things that other photographers have not captured, mainly the streams (burns) waterfalls and cascades of the southern uplands with the names like Quave and Happertutie, these places are not easy to access.

Travel can also present opportunities for photography and Colin is no stranger to this, as you can see on the website, Canada, France and the Canary Isles and more can be seen here shortly.

Colins passion for photography started at an early age when his mother bought him his first camera, a Kodak instamatic 50. He has had several cameras since this,  mostly those in the Canon range, although not exclusively.

His current equipment consists of a Canon D5 Mark4 body with a Canon 24- 105mm lens (this is the workhorse lens) a Canon 70-300 lens with an old Canon D6 mark1 body for backup, he also uses a small Sony a6300 with a16-50 lens and 55-210 lense for when not taking the full camera bag.
